Summary 03796: finehour: player falls into terrain sometimes
Description In some cases, the player falls into solid ground and disappears for no apparent reason. It has happened to me a couple of times, though I'm not sure how this can be reproduced. Luckily, I was able to take some screenshots.

Also, one can easily notice the glitchy surfaces in screenshots 2 and 3.

I've never quite understood if it's meant to represent some kind of '3d' effect, ie, you can go behind things....

The game just seems like they were trying too hard to do sometihng cool, and ended up with something that just seems like a complete mess...

I'd be interested in seeing how it runs on a real PCB.

True. I'll confirm it, label it possible pending some PCB video or other analysis.

pretty sure it's a bug given Kale's other findings... The NS2 driver seems very broken in rather subtle ways.

It's a bug. It was previously fixed then broken again. It doesn't ocurr in 0.201. Regression version is mame 0.202
But at the same time, 0.202 fixed 03797 and 07029 of this game (both problems with credits)

BTW, I haven't found any pcb video of the game, but I found this video of wii's virtual console version. That "falling into terrain" bug is not present:

I discovered that if you go into the service mode(F2) after the game boots then exit(F2 again) it fixes this bug for whatever reason. (see the video)

I Haven't played through the whole game though since I'm not a fan of this title, but the game should be playable.

does it permanently fix it, or do you have to do this every time you boot?

could be a bug if the ram isn't in the expected default state if the game isn't initializing things correctly otherwise.

You'll need to do this every time you boot the game to prevent this bug from happening. I also found out that if you flip the screen in the service mode it fixes the bug permanently, but it causes some graphical issues seen below.

I noticed in the recent Finest Hour livestream that Haze was not using the marker button to select targets. While this game does auto-target the nearest enemy, the middle button lets you cycle through targets when multiple enemies are on the screen. It is probably most useful when selecting which part of a boss to shoot at...

Since this game was only released in Japan, the instructions are hard to come by. I will upload photos of the original Japanese cards as well as a simple English translation. I'm not sure if this will make the game any easier to play. The top of the Card says Finest Hour, Destroy the final weapon !!

Btw, I have noticed that in addition to the pits you can fall into, sometimes when you fly in the air you will land on an invisible ground plane and be able to walk in the sky. It probably corresponds to the pit below, as if the ground plane coordinates are in the wrong location in that vertical slice of the screen.
