I remember quite some years ago, the entire game playing that slow.

While I can confirm the same behavior this game and driver are marked Graphics and Sound Imperfect.

I'm not entirely convinced that this is acceptable as a bug either. The entire game runs really slow for me now on an i5-2520M. I'll leave it open for now, see if any devs have an opinion on it.

A video is not necessary as it's easy to see exactly what the issue is.

If there is an older version of MAME where the slowdown isn't present then this report is valid. However, I believe the reported behavior has always been this way.

I didn't mean to bump this, I thought it was recent (it was on the first page of view and search). I thought this issue was caused by the threaded or multi-threading option because I had this problem years ago and disabling that fix it, but I can't seem to find the option in the config file for .190 to test it.

I remember that and the reason it was.

As for this game, I also remembered that it wasn't the quick time events causing the issue, but whenever a transparent object appeared onscreen like the Die Hard Title logo during the demos. Of course my computer just may not be powerful enough that effect anymore with all the changes to mame since then, so I'll leave it at that.

After testing many official and unofficial mame versions, I have found out that this issue doesn't ocurr in mameuifx 0.152 and previous versions. I know mameuifx is not an official version of mame, but this enhancement is not included in their list of hacks and changes compared to official mame ( http://mame32fx.altervista.org/features.htm ) , so maybe it would be helpful to developers to know about it.

All versions of official mame (including 0.152 and previous) have this incidence.
Mameuifx 0.153 and its following versions as well as the later ARCADE mame distributions also have the issue.

it's the cost of progress.

a lot of improvements have been made to the driver over the years, they cause it to run slower.

by using MAME 0.152 you'll get different bugs instead, eg. backgrounds in Final FIght Revenge will break after a while etc.

MAMEUIFX is an ugly build full of ugly hacks, you want to avoid it if possible.

I'm only using mameuifx 0.152 in my cabinet to run this game. Not even official 0.152 avoids this issue, but somehow works fine on that version of mameuifx.
The rest of my arcade cabinet's mame games are emulated by current MAME 0.201.

Improvements on the stv driver improve many other games, but not this one: Die Hard Arcade has become unplayable for me since version 0.195. It runs too slow, even in my i5 3,3 ghz :(

Much related to 05188. A lot of saturn based games have similar slowdown issues but performance is going back up slowly. Not an easy fix.
