Others sets not display boss energy.

The driver mentions:
NOTE! Karnov USA & Karnov Japan sets have different gameplay!
While it doesn't elaborate on specifics, that was the original assertion. A visible enemy power bar may have been added to the US release to make it 'easier' (not an uncommon thing) for the person to play.
My gut tells me this is a deliberate regional difference.

The energy bar is displayed in this arcade capture of the US version:
And the faithful x68k port of the Japanese version doesn't have the energy bar.
As Tafoid mentions, according to https://www26.atwiki.jp/gcmatome/pages/2113.html , differences in the US version are
Stages are shorter. Positions of powerups. Enemy positions. Energy bar is displayed in a boss scene. Super missile appears even in the 1st stage.
