Summary 06584: DOCUMENTATION: Noted description issues
Description There are some possible description issues which may or may not be a mistake or translation issue and am listing them here for consideration.

gokuparo: Description is "Gokujyou Parodius", but the Super Famicom port is described as "Gokujou Parodius" (note the missing 'y')
raystorm: "Ray Storm" should be "RayStorm" (same as PSX port)

There are quite a few more examples like this. If desired I could add them to this report if I encounter them.

You will need to provide some proof of the correct spelling.

For example, in the 19XX manual: https://www.arcade-museum.com/manuals-videogames/1/19XX_manual.pdf

THANK YOU FOR PURCHASING 19XX: THE WAR AGAINST DESTINY™

So, our current title is correct.

Consistency should trump the formatting the person who typed the manual used, in this case.

Thousands of games separate the main title from the subtitle using ' - ' instead of ': ', and the handful of exceptions stick out like a sore thumb.

The manual has nothing to do with it, it's just an example for an offical document. We use the title the developer or publisher intended.

I'm closing this since this appears just to be an attempt to have the title how you want it, regardless of correctness.

Examples of use you give above largely fall under the following grammar rule:
http://www.grammar-monster.com/lessons/colons_in_references.htm

It may very well be that dash is the oddball in these game name cases because computers (at least Windows OS) cannot handle a filename which contains a colon " : ", so "--" was chosen as an alternative symbol.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Filename#Reserved_characters_and_words

I'm not convinced that any of the game descriptions which contain a dash are valid grammar and my very well require changing to a colon.

I've deleted the new bug and cleaned up this one.

MAME will take notice of any proven errors in translating titles (as your example with gokuparo seems legitimate). We are ignoring : and - issues because as I explained above, using a colon seems to be the proper way. Those descriptions with dashes will need to re-evaluated and aren't subject to this or any other bug reports.

Some other specific entries include Out Run (with the space) which is already correct. The original copyright application for the name is "out run"
http://cocatalog.loc.gov/cgi-bin/Pwebrecon.cgi?v1=2&ti=1,2&Search%5FArg=out%20run&Search%5FCode=TALL&CNT=25&PID=cyYRwZf9CXZEFb80Ezk7OnUm0&SEQ=20170524133311&SID=1

Another you mentioned is sonicwi3: "Aero Fighters 3 / Sonic Wings 3". Depending on the bios region selected, the title will in fact show Aero Fighters 3 (US MVS) in MAME. Since English is the default language, the two titles share the spotlight and the US/English version gets the first mention.

In short, I've left in only ones I could see some argument for. Proof can come in many forms but the more official it is (manufacturer homepage, copyright/trademark information, game documentation) the more weight it gets.
EoceneMiacid, please, do not pull this stuff again. Opening new bugs because you weren't "heard" the first time is unacceptable. You have plenty of methods to contact people on the team without resorting to that.

I understand that filing the same bug report is not desirable and I assure you I wouldn't have done this if the original wasn't dismissed the way it was.

Thanks for looking into it.
