Likely regression happened here:
https://github.com/mamedev/mame/commit/30d296ba22ba538f2007349eaa1bb8644786eed3

There was a lot of a7800 dev that day and any one commit, in theory, could have caused it.

According to people testing the game on hardware in the development thread: https://forums.atariage.com/topic/141817-wasp-7800-homebrew-with-a-twist/
the early versions up to and including 1.05 that's in the software list didn't work on hardware. On hardware 1.05 had the same problem of not showing the player and wasp sprites, so it turns out the MESS regression was actually an improvement :)

Anyway, the eventual cartridge release is available in the same thread and works in MAME. I've submitted a PR to replace the nonworking version: https://github.com/mamedev/mame/pull/10478
