Tested on MAME 0.202
The points are awarded when you touch again the bounced character or if you don't touch and let it fall down.
It has its sense: Jumping on the box cloud is a risky thing but very point rewarding, you can even get 9000 points, but it is easy to lose one life trying.
Only the final marked number when jumping the box cloud are the points added to your score after touching the bounced pal or let him fall.
This should be closed as Bugs That Are Not Bugs.

I've uploaded 2 savestates. Use the one marked as "level 3-1" to check my explanation
The other uploaded savestate was a mistake, it could be deleted.

So what you're saying is that the amount to be awarded is shown first, then awarded later after satisfying some other condition?

Yes, but that condition is unavoidable. The conditions to get the marked points can be 2:
a) Touching again the bounced character
b) Not touching again the character and let him touch the ground, which means losing one life.

After jumping on the box, the last marked number will be added to your score when a or b conditions ocurr.

In the following videos I will show you the explained conditions:

a) Touching again the bounced character
Just pay attention to the score. The final marked number in the box, in this case 600, is added to the score when touching the bounced pal. The score turns from 32.800 to 33.400



b) Not touching again the character and let him touch the ground, which means losing one life.
Pay attention to the score. Right after losing a life, 9000 points are added to the score. That was the final marked number when jumping on the box.
The score turns from 25.450 to 34.450
