Works with -nodrc or by adding MIPS3DRC_EXTRA_INSTR_CHECK to the DRC options. Therefore my best guess of regression commit is https://git.redump.net/mame/commit/src/devices/cpu/mips?id=f3f10eef0f754f13b93787faa405f2180dff897a
I'll let other more qualified people decide if it's better to add the extra check option in the driver or if something in the CPU core needs updating.

Hey, I tried the -nodrc option with sf2049 in MAME 0.256,
& nope, didn't fix it

hope there's a patch for it soon.

Sorry, I looked ad warfa. Let me see sf2049, may be a slightly different bug.

Hmm, seems I somehow screwed up my testing, sorry. Neither warfa nor sf2049 are fixed with -nordc nor with the other method. Back to the drawing board.

I think the special edition has the loop bug
