In the future when posting screen shots, please post unedited PNG's which are produced with MAME's internal capture (F12).
Confirmed, found regression and added related bug info.

I'd put money on the 'with eyes' version being right... It just strikes me as a very 'Namco' like thing to do. It also lets you know if there are enemies in the tunnel, and which direction they're heading in, which I'd say was important.

Namco did similar tricks on pacland etc IIRC.
