According to this video where he plays two games, both games end with 2 lives lost. (Times 3:20-3:45 and 3:53- 4:40) - he is reading the back panel instructions which also state "once beam force cannon is hit twice, the game is over" (about 5:20)

There are apparently 2 different versions listed (Black and Gray) which may account for the manual being for the other one (which lists "3 beam force cannons (1 active, 2 reserve"). This may be for for Gray shelled, presumably later produced game. The one in MAME currently is functioning as expected and matches the Black shelled version from 1980.

This video shows the 3 base version - Gray - you can see it start and show you 3 bases and also has some additional sound effects (starting 0:27 - he died twice and the game was still running before he powered down). I'd assume it is a later version (1981) than what is in MAME.

Very well. I was mainly basing it on the manual I found, and it seemed to me the one I owned as a kid gave you 3 lives. But now that I know this, I can make an artwork file for it.

I guess a bit more digging around (it was late last night) and the other version is in MAME, just not emulated 100% yet (einvaderc). It uses a different processor than the TMS1100 vs COP444.
