talking this through with Kold I can only assume that original gyrodine boards have issues with rendering flipped tiles.

the shadow sprite is a perfectly normal sprite in spriteram, the only thing special about it seems to be that it gets drawn with the flip bit set, which apparently corrupts the sprite.

there are weird lines around some of the background tiles too which makes me think similar is happening there, as if once flipped they end up slightly offset and misaligned.

since there are multiple sources showing the very same issues it must be an issue that affects at least the majority of PCBs for the game, and probably one MAME should emulate at some point, even if it looks awful.
