Summary | 08212: marble: Music missing (randomly, level 4) | ||||
Description |
In the Atari arcade game "Marble Madness" in level 4 the music often stops preliminary. I.e. when the marble reaches the popup bollards (those make tooting sounds), the music often stops (only when you die?) and won't continue to the 2nd part. The game is famous for its twelve-tone classical music tracks, thus it should be investigated why the music of level 4 often stops too early. |

If the OP or someone can make an .INP for this that can be demonstrated what is happening. I only tried a quick level 4 with cheats and even when I died a lot I didn't notice a time where the music flat out stopped. Do we know how far back this issues happens? Has there been any regression testing to try to isolate approx. when this started to malfunction or has it always been this way? |

If I remember well, the bug exist at least since many months and in multiple "Marble Madness" romsets. The machine is an IBM Thinkpad X61t (Core2Duo 1.6GHz, Intel graphics (gdi), 4GB RAM, old Win10 version 1711?) which is not very fast, but fully sufficient to run this game well. |

Leaving open/acknowledged until such time someone who can make an .inp recording to play to the point where the issue shows up. Any breakage could possibly be caused by bad communications since it doesn't happen every time. There was also a complete FM rewrite not long ago which may have a hand in this as well. If someone can find a recorded play from a PCB or original machine with what is suppose to sound like on Level 4 throughout, that would help as well. |

Today I played Marble Madness again a few games (default romset with TTL2(?) PCB setting). The truncated music may be related with getting sucked up by the yellow vacuum cleaner nozzles (music stops here randomly). If the marble passes them undamaged, the music seems to play normal. |

Not sure if this is what you mean with the music stopping: &ab_channel=MrOuterHeavena.k.a.Fungi66 |

Huh? Don't you hear that there is no music in the above video?! (The "beep bup boop" stuff of the moving bollards is not music but sound effects.) There should be music (harp with bass etc.) continuing in the background until the marble has reached the GOAL. When I play it, normally in about 4 of 5 played games the music keeps playing to the end. Only when player makes an early mistake (e.g. getting sucked by vacuum cleaners) the music ends and only sound effects continue. |

We'll still need PCB footage to confirm that this is even a MAME bug. I do recall the music stopping long before the FM rewrite. |
