Summary 08459: sraider: [possible] Set Coin 1 & 2 to Free Play causes sound and graphical glitches.
Description In the DIP switch settings you can select Coin A and Coin B = FREE PLAY.
If you do this when the game starts player 1 has no sound except when blown up and the blue grid is missing. Upon death when player 1's second ship starts, the sound and graphics are functioning properly.

While this can be an issue, it is more of a slight inconvenience as there is a work around.

In DIP Switch settings in MAME set Coin A: FREE PLAY and Coin B: 1 Coin / 1 Credit.
If you do this the game seems to work fine. Only when both are set to FREE PLAY does the bug happen.
Steps To Reproduce Start game.
Go into DIP Switches
Set Coin A: FREE PLAY
Set Coin B: FREE PLAY

Start a 1 player or 2 player game. At the very start player 1 has no sound or background graphics. After the 1st death, player 1 works fine.

bugs like this are almost certainly issues in the original game

as setting both coins to freeplay is basically redundant, some games tie debug / development features to such a setting, what you're seeing could be a leftover of that from when the game was being developed.

many games were simply never properly tested in freeplay when being developed also, you see this a lot now so many arcades / shows operate the 'pay to enter, all machines are on freeplay' models.

@Haze thanks for the info. You are probably correct in your thoughts. At least the game plays fine when setting only Coin A to Free Play. :)
