Each character has special moves. Jacky Bryant, Sarah Bryant, Lau Chan, Pai Chan, Kage-Maru, Wolf Hawkfield, and Jeffry McWild use the Guard (Button 3) + Punch (Button 1) combination mentioned above.
https://strategywiki.org/wiki/Virtua_Fighter/Moves

Tried to pull off this special move combo with several characters for about 10 minutes of test time, but only managed to get Lau Chan to execute a throw one time against Jeffry McWild when he was about to push me out of the ring.

Looks like the timing and conditions to execute special moves are very specific. Not sure how hard it is to pull off these combos on original hardware.

Scott
P.S. Looks like there is a special move for Akira Yuki that is not mentioned in the Strategy Guide linked above. At 12:44 of this video, he sweeps the opponent.

Did some more button mashing testing.

Got Lau Chan to execute a throw two more times, but didn't get any of the other characters to do a special move with the Guard + Punch combo.

Still not sure why that combo worked the three times that it did, but didn't work the hundreds of other times I tried it. Button press synchronization? (I could jumper both button inputs together to eliminate this as a possibility) Button press length? Timing? Range?

Hopefully someone who has access to a Virtua Fighter PCB and can consistently pull off these special moves can make a recording of the screen and button press timing for the moves on PCB vs. MAME *or* at least let us know if it works as well in MAME as it does on the PCB.
