Summary 01029: starforc: Side-By-Side test.
Description Side-By-Side test

Game: Starforce
Set:
Version: starforc ( matches the Able Corp set ).
PCB: Original (Able Corp 2-layer )
Mame Vers.: dmame55b, vsync on.
Test Date:

Observations: Firstly, the stars. In mame, these are primarily blue with just a few white ones. The PCB is the reverse - or at least a 50/50 split with white and blue stars. Here's where it gets interesting: in the X68000 emulator, running starforce, it ties in with mame. So this would suggest mame is correct.
However, this is not what I am seeing.

It appears there are three types of background stars: faint, half-bright and bright. The stars appear longer and thinner in the arcade although this is probably an illusion as the stars are part of the character set.

Then there are the glowing stars:
Every so often, there is a group of red stars. The arcade has some stars in the middle of the red stars that glow twice and return back to red. In mame, these stars are there but fixed at white and do not glow.

Similarly, later on in the game, the general background of blue/white stars is replaced by mostly red stars. As above, there are stars in the arcade, amongst the red stars, that glow twice and return back to red.
In mame, these are simply fixed at white and look odd.

However, here is another oddity: During parts of the attract mode in the arcade, the stars that should glow during the game, STAY at white.

Similarly, the 'dust clouds' have a high percentage of white stars.

There are some diamond stars. These look nice in mame. In the arcade, the diamond stars are made up of dots that look coarse and do not look quite as good ( pity ). However, that is what I am seeing.

All the other graphics look okay and match the arcade.

Audio:

In mame, when you press 'start' and the game begins, a short jingle plays. In mame, there is an annoying 'squeak' in the background to this jingle - and during the game.
Despite sticking my ear to the arcade speaker, I do not hear this.

Overall, this is a good emulation and were it not for the original to compare against, would be considered 'perfect'.
