|Summary||01555: vanvan, vanvanb, vanvank: Graphics are corrupted.|
There are several graphics glitches present on the screen in attract mode and during play.
I've dowloaded previous versions of Mame and it seems that the problem first occurs on Mame 0.91 but it was less important. I've recorded a video in which you can see the game running on Mame 0.90 (left screen and no glitches), Mame 0.91 (center screen - only minor graphics glitches [player's car and when you destroy an ennemy car) and Mame .0123 (right screen - severe graphics glitches [same problems with 0.123u6]) so you can judge yourself.

Confirmed regression version on the major graphics corruption is 0.115u4. We might need to separate this report into two to address the 0.91 issues as they don't appear to be needing the same fix. I'll keep together for now.
By the way, nice video comparison!

Ok, background is assumed to be black.
If anyone has solid PCB proof that the game actually does have the ability to change bgcolor (black/gray), please post it here.

|Adding photos from auction site. Van-Van Car uses the same main board as Dream Shopper / Red Selector. The emulation for both games has incorrect display of background colors and lacks transparent pixels on the main character sprite.|

|this is more confusing, because aside from the blue used on the flags, the only other blue in the palette is the more cyan colour, used for the text at the top, which clearly isn't the same as the background.|

so more purple in that one.. again not in the palette.
I wonder if there's just an r/g/b register hidden somewhere in RAM for the background colour, or some other set of resistors dedicated to it.
could be MAME has a mirror installed for something else and writes are going elsewhere so we're not seeing them
