Summary | 03922: tokio, tokiob, tokiou: Incorrect plane shadow when flying higher
Description | In some areas of the game, the plane goes up the clouds and the background is more detailed. During these scenes, the plane's shadow cannot appear because it's flying too high, but in the emulation the shadow appears over these areas. It seems to be a sprite priority bug (see the attached screenshot). Please verify it agaist the original machine.

Additional Information | Please someone close this report. The plane shadow is ok!

I've found a Tokio/Scramble Formation bootleg PCB gameplay video on Youtube. It shows that the plane shadow is transparent, instead of solid black: And this is another video from the Taito Legends PS2 version of the game, which shows a transparent shadow too (I thought the PS2 version used MAME source code for emulation): Maybe this helps on providing emulation accuracy, since the bootleg version is the only one fully working in MAME... until someone provides a MCU dump/exploit of the original PCB. Another detail from the PS2 version is that the plane shadow is actually visible on the higher areas of the game as well, and not only over the clouds/near the streets as I supposed before. Again, this still needs confirmation against an original PCB, since this bootleg video doesn't show these higher areas. |

I don't understand the report (or at least not the 'shadow should be tranparent' part in the comments) the shadow already flickers in MAME, on a real arcade monitor this appears as closer to semi-transparent due to phosphor life. obviously in a static screenshot captured from the emulator it's going to look either entirely solid or entirely invisible. also is the first part of the report "shadow shouldn't appear if high up in the sky" based on ANYTHING other than 'I don't like how this looks' ? |

Haze is right, the shadow flickers and that's what makes it transparent. When you pause the game, the shadow disappear or becomes solid black, but it's definitely not a bug! And the part where I said that the shadow should not appear when the plane is high up in the sky was based on loose memories I had from the 80's, sorry about that. But after seeing the PS2 version in the video above, I guess I was wrong. Please someone mark this report as INVALID or close it. Thanks! |
