Summary | 00443: galaxian: The backround sound during gameplay is slow by about a factor of 2. | ||||
Description |
The backround sound during gameplay is slow by about a factor of 2. I have 3 original midway boards and the backround beat on those all match exactly so I'm sure it's just a problem in mame. If I run a board right next to my mame cab - the background beat in mame sounds at almost exactly 1/2 of the correct pace. The rest of the sounds and the gameplay itself all appear perfect. It's only the backround sound that isn't correct. mp3s from PCB are attached. Follow-up by Tafoid in 0.116: The earliest I could test was MAME 0.37b15 - bug still exists then. |

Somehow the mp3s mentioned got lost ... Recheck against new galaxian driver would be interesting. |

Can anybody with access to a galaxian pcb verify whether this report is still valid? |

I'd be curious as well. There were so many different Galaxian-types around .. hard to know what it original Namco or not. |

"The rest of the sounds all appear perfect" I strongly disagree. The player's firing sound and player exploding sound in MAME are not accurate to the real pcb as evident in the videos and mp3 recordings. |

Aren't the firing and explosion sounds samples? |

External samples... no. 0.36b11: Juergen Buchmueller and Tatsuyuki Satoh improved emulation of the Galaxians sound subsystem. Samples are no longer used. |

The speed's better if you set audio/galaxian.c NEW_LFO to 1, if others agree this will probably be enabled in the next version. |

Regarding background hum speed, this report can be set to resolved. |

It's close, I'll grant you - but the faster hum doesn't start until you shoot or a couple seconds in. What would be causing that? |

couriersud's changes in 0133u2 improved the background hum even more: the harmonics sound correct now. Tafoid's remark (above this msg) still applies though. |

Mike Coates was so kind to grant permission to cite him here: ---- citation ---- I've had in excess of 50 galaxian / moon cresta boards, bootlegs and originals - for quite a lot of the sound circuitry (and the video mixing and colours) they used whatever resistors / capacitors / transistors they had handy - sound varies from board to board quite considerably - even if the boards are originals from the same manufacturer. ---- citation ---- This perfectly explains the difficulties in discrete sound emulation. Even if you have high quality recordings at hand there is still uncertainty whether they fit the schematics available. |

I have seen 2 galaxian PCB's with differing hum speeds for each... Proving couriersud's statement above. |

In such a case, I think MAME should emulate the audio according to the values in the schematics. We'll emulate it as ideal (as intended), rather than realistic when there's such wild variation in the realistic aspect. |
