Summary 06577: polepos, poleposj, poleposa1, poleposa2: [possible] The game will appear to be temporarily stuck on a letter when entering initials.
Description When entering your initials, the game will often appear to be stuck on a letter as you cycle through then automatically jump to where you actually are. The game knows which letter you are on but the graphics will not always reflect this. This does NOT happen when entering initials for the top 6 scores (those displayed in the attract mode). However, this will always happen with initials above the 6th score.
Steps To Reproduce Start a race and score well enough to enter your initials but not well enough to enter them in the top 6 scores. Aim between 10,000 and 11,000 points. Cycle through the letters by spinning your wheel or holding the arrow key on your keyboard. It will often appear to be "stuck" on a certain letter then show the correct letter a second or two later.

Enter your initials in the top 6 scores (above 12,000 by default) and you will see it correctly display every letter when cycling through as it never gets stuck.

I can confirm the oddness here. I'd swear it seems like it is being governed in some way by what is being sent out by the audio side of things. If you hold and watch as the music plays, you can see it pause and start at very same times musical transitions happen or notes play, every time. Not sure, though, if this is original behaviour or not and I have not regression tested it - if someone can get this checked against original hardware, that would be a great start.

mmarion4: In the future, be sure to use the latest MAME to check/verify/report tests. They are produced monthly and readily available on mamedev.org While not in this case, in some cases bugs have been fixed from older version making reports with older verisons invalid.
