Summary MESS-specific 08037: snes, snespal [mk2 and clones]: Games freeze on black screen before making it to title screen.
Description As far as I can tell this affects all Mortal Kombat II clones EXCEPT mk2ua, the earlier US revision. The freeze happens after an animated "Sculptured Software" company logo, present in all clones except mk2ua. Some of the clones also lack sound during the logo animation, which seems like it's probably related.

I tried these in 0.215 also with no success. I thought maybe these were working before the SNES driver had some regressions around then? Couldn't go back farther since things no longer compile on my Mac :(

From my local SNES bugs document - known.

Mortal Kombat 2 (Jpn, Euro) - mk2, mk2j - Regression September 25, 2019
https://github.com/mamedev/mame/commit/55bda8eb98feabf0c8b119503d9260b2e512c2e5
After Sculptured Software Logo, Black Screen/Hang. Oddly, the US version (mk2ua) works

Sadly, there are other issues with that SNES commit played a part in but also fixed some things. Someday it will even out.

You may wish to update your note. I replaced mk2u in a PR you merged a few days ago. Now it is mk2ua alone that is working.

FYI, my pending PR has mk2up which is bit-for-bit identical to mk2u, and for now I marked it as unsupported. I thought it better to report the general issue here rather than going back and mark all the other clones unsupported at this time.
