Summary 08061: gorkans: Bad roms in a game labelled with no issues
Description Hello,
I was just playing around with Gorkans and Mr.TNT and I have seen that in Gorkans, roms in locations 7D and 7J are labelled as bad dumps in Service mode.

I think the game should be labelled with the issue that it has bad roms/chds.
Steps To Reproduce 1. Activate the "Service mode" dip switch.
2. Restart the game (F3 default key)

I haven't looked into this one too deeply but I'm leaning on the fact this was a clone made from mrtnt and likely they didn't change the self check data to match the new rom configuration. I tested since added (0.75) and it always shows "BAD" for those two locations.

Someone with some assembly chops would need to verify that, however. The PCB picture department situation for those two games (mrtnt/gorkens) is a dire.

yeah, it's possible it's been hacked at some point, rather than actually being bad; nobody has reported any issues with it.

could be the copyright strings were changed without the CRCs being updated for example.

it should be noted that the dump came from a PCB using 8 smaller ROMs anyway, so the test doesn't even correctly correspond to the number of ROMs on the PCB.

mrtnt is also encrypted, while gorkans isn't, so could be the gorkans set we have is a bootleg also

maybe there are undumped versions of it out there, but unless something else turns up, this is all we have to go on.

I see. So, it is just a bootleg overlook (or laziness). So, this might lead that Mr.Tnt is indeed the original.

It is odd that Arcade-History started reporting that Mr.Tnt is a re-release of Gorkans, so I began to investigate with no fruitful result. There is no source other than the game roms. Indeed, Gorkans has smaller chunks of memory than Mr.Tnt, but I don't know how relevant this is to deciding the original set.

There are Mr. TNT ports to various computers (Atari 400/800, Commodore 64) and I've never seen and game title Gorkans other than this.

The concensus is that this is expected behavior. Even the Eyes Bootleg (eyesb), using the same type of rom check, does a similar showing BAD for known good rom dumps from the board.
