This bug still exists, SDLMAME64 0.147u1

If you watch the attract, you notice there's something off about the flickering until the character gets in front of the building. Pausing at the right time before that gives the same result as in the attached screenshot, against the far background while flickering there is a black outline of the character.

That's good information to know. I don't run SDLMAME64, so I wouldn't have seen that.
Perhaps it would be a good idea to edit this report and put that build in it please.

SDLMAME is part of mainline MAME, it's not a separately maintained port. The "64" suffix just indicates that I'm running a 64b version (as opposed to a 32b version.)

I can confirm it's still a bug here, 32-bit Windows. The only way to really see it is you need to PAUSE+SHIFT as the Ninja is walking the screen in the intro - the shadow shows only above the fence.
