Summary | 08579: flstory, flstoryj: Rename "The Fairyland Story" and "The Fairyland Story (Japan)" to "The Fairyland Story (new and old)" | ||||
Description |
Self-explanatory. While it should be noted that the game DID get a limited release in the US and potentially other areas (based on several pictures of converted standup cabs that have surfaced in recent years), there's nothing to suggest that either ROM version was changed to accommodate any regional changes. Quite in fact, all either ROM version does is change how the items spawn. From a Japanese fansite ( https://ocn1.net/takebo/fland.html ): "There are two versions of The Fairyland Story: new and old. The old version features a castle lookout on the top left and right sides of the screen, where you can climb up to change items that appear. By using this feature, you can get Star Tiara, Book of Death, etc. in the first half of the game. This makes it easier to accumulate the remaining units in the first half of the game. However, in the older version, the rise and fall in rank is not stable, so there are cases where items must be changed in the second half of the game, and it is relatively more difficult than the new version." I can also vouch for this claim based on my own research and repeated gameplay of the game. To further prove my point, the hidden credits sequence (accessed by holding the magic and jump buttons at a Game Over, or at the continue screen) is still partly in Japanese in both versions. I propose that we change the ROM names to accommodate this. |

"(Old version)" and "(new version)" as with Rainbow Islands, maybe? |

Fair, it was always just a little offputting two different versions of the ROM, separated by region when there's almost no difference to them at first glance. Hoping this gets somewhere! |

given that it's known which one is the new version, and which one is the old version, and they're referred to outside of MAME in such a way, it makes sense to name them as such. |

Yeah, I always wondered where the "US" and "Japan" naming came from, as that tripped me up a bit in my research. I always figured it was just dumpers figuring things out as they go, but still... |

Renamed the clone set. It’s just an earlier release. I think they were originally named that way because the earlier version was never found on boards sourced outside Japan. |
