Is this really a diagonal movement or just the combination of up or down and the game's scrolling?

Diagonal movement is not possible, because the up/down + left/right keypresses are not recognized. The game scrolls horizontally all the time.

The arrow keys are on port E0, which is read directly by the system. I assume therefore it's working as designed.

I *think* there's a video out there which showed the player being able to shoot while moving, so perhaps multiple key presses are supposed to be supported, just not diagonal movement.
I'd say this needs real hardware verification before dismissing it completely as a btanb.
