Summary 09328: terraf and clones: The FM sound chip actually being used is different.
Description Terra Force board uses YM3812, not YM3526.
I'm not very familiar with bootlegs, but the official PCB is that.

Comment in source "3526, used on almost all non-bootlegs"
I wonder why the person that wrote it, said 3526 then. Needs more research.

There is a Japanese website that provides detailed information about the history of Nihon Bussan's game music.
https://igcc.jp/%e3%83%8b%e3%83%81%e3%83%96%e3%83%84%e9%9f%b3%e6%a5%bd%e5%a4%89%e9%81%b7%e8%a8%982/

Below is an excerpt from the article.

From 'Chouji Meikyuu Legion,' released in 1987, the OPL2 chip (YM3812), a superior compatible chip, was adopted, replacing the YM3526.
That said, at the time of this work, the in-house FM sound source driver still did not support the 3812, and it seems that only the functions equivalent to the 3526 had been used up to that point.

The only exception after switching to the YM3812 was 'Crazy Climber 2' (1988). In this work, due to certain circumstances, the older YM3526 was used again, and it basically had a setup that did not allow for sampled drums.

Therefore, the YM3812 is also used in Legion and clones.

Of course, it needs to be verified, but the sound of the YM3812 gives a softer impression compared to the sound of the YM3526.

I mean multiple PCB photo evidence, that comment I quoted can't have been made up from thin air (I hope...)
edit: the comment is from Lord-Nightmare when he did a sound related commit to this & related drivers: https://github.com/mamedev/mame/commit/0fdef71b9a497ae909f8471bd152073c0e761c49

A Legion PCB pic showing a YM3526 is here: https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiMYd1Q9ZqwoJtXkjPxXAQRjsyKnzgmOi85cYbcZ2wvWc3Cn0s98V-gSfncZmI1oL-j1gOvHtWJuAJHx7Lg7ZKvZcX7NruJHq-3pbhte6LpF_FxtQ-7LcsM80DSdri33wJMn0K-pN2487E/s2048/Chouji+Meikyuu+Legion_2.JPG

This shows a YM3812 on a genuine Terra Force PCB (see "Terra Force (PCB 2)") https://www.ym2149.com/arcadepcb/pcb/nichibutsu.html

In my case, I judged by comparing the sounds in gameplay videos using the actual game board.
Of course, this is based on personal perception and cannot be said to be absolute.
Even with the same game board, there may be versions equipped with different sound chips.

However, regarding Legion, it also feels kind of like a YM3526.
At the very least, I felt that Terra Force and Armed F sounded like they used the YM3812.
Verification is necessary.

Most PCB photos unfortunately show only the top board. There are two distinct revisions of the bottom board: one with two EPROM sockets next to the Z80, used by Legion and presumably also Crazy Climber 2, the other with only one EPROM socket near the Z80, used by Terra Force, Sky Robo and probably all other originals. My suspicion is that the latter was mostly or always populated with a YM3812 just below said EPROM socket.
