Summary 09575: all games in aristmk4 driver: Freeze when refresh speed made lower
Description There are various issues with the "Screen Refresh Rate" slider, available if you enable cheats.

1. The slider doesn't move when adjusted. (this is a random event)
2. Pressing DEL doesn't return it to the default setting.
3. Doesn't get saved into game.cfg
4. If set to to 10Hz or lower, the game runs very fast.
5. With cgold2 (and possibly many others), if the slider is pushed to the left (i.e. lower the refresh rate), MAME completely freezes, making this a severe issue.
Steps To Reproduce >mame cgold2 -cheat

Press any key at the popup message. The game starts.

Press ~ key to enter the sliders. Find the "Screen Refresh Rate" slider.

Press Left-arrow key. MAME freezes totally.
Additional Information Tested with 0.288, 0.289, and current git.

I don't see the problem here: you are doing something possible with -cheat only and pretend it works?

Tested with 3bagfull. Initial setup directions as indicated in Robbbert's note in MT06480 were followed before reproducing this issue. Here's how I confirmed it:

In the UI, make sure "Cheats" is enabled in Miscellaneous Options so you can access refresh rate adjustments in the slider controls.

After pressing the ~ key to show the sliders, press the down arrow key repeatedly until you find the "Screen Refresh Rate" slider. After attempting to press Left to adjust it, the emulator freezes.

1. The game has a CRTC. If the slider has no effect, it means the game wrote to CRTC which updates the refresh rate.
2. Unrelated, but yeah, that's annoying and should be doable to fix.
3. Don't really care, MAME doesn't save -cheat overclock stuff to cfg.
4. Use at your own risk trying out such extremes.
5. Emulator freezing is a bug, yes. But since it's triggered by a deliberate 'cheat'. I'm not sure we should care much?

1. The adjustment does make a difference, the game's speed changes, and the text Hz changes too. But the slider graphic stays stuck firmly in the middle.

There also seems to be no limit to how fast the refresh can go. Although it's limited to 1 Hz in the downward direction, I went as far as 2000 Hz upwards and it still could keep going higher. Is there a limit?

5. That decision is up to the developers. But I believe that MAME should never be able to crash or freeze, no matter what is done.
