Summary | 05701: daytona and clones: Hacked versions are not marked bootleg, and some games have "(Japan)" in them despite the region is changeable.
Description |
The following sets have 'Japan' in their full names and descriptions, ignoring the fact the region can be changed (see Steps to Reproduce) daytona daytonam daytonat daytonata daytonase? (never tried it) The following sets should have the Manufacturer changed from "Sega" to "bootleg", for which those are not official Sega products, and are hacks, much like the SF2CE bootlegs: daytonam daytonat daytonata |
||||
Steps To Reproduce | To change the region, open the Test Menu (F2) and select Game System. Look for option for Country, you can change it to Japan (default), USA (adds Winners don't use Drugs/Recycle It, Don't Trash It) and Export (World).
Additional Information |
Model 2 Emulator omits the region information for Daytona sets, by the way. Here is my suggested new description/full title names for the affected games: daytona: Daytona USA (Revision A) daytonam: Daytona USA (To The MAXX, bootleg) daytonat: Daytona USA (Turbo hack, set 1) daytonata: Daytona USA (Turbo hack, set 2) daytonase: Daytona USA Special Edition (Revision A) daytonas (the one with Saturn ads in attract mode) and daytona93 (the harder, no link-play deluxe set) do not require any change. |

the report is accurate, the region on these games is selected in the service mode, so either a) all regions should be listed or b) no regions listed at all if there are sets of the game which are actually locked to 1 region then a) is preferable, otherwise b) tends to be the norm. Obviously the manufacturer of the hacks should be changed to bootleg or hack. |

Haze: that, however, creates some issues for another game, Scud Race [scud - model3.c]. Model 3 games can have the region changed, but with an hidden code: http://www.supermodel3.com/Forum/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=50 Scud Race, however, is different from other Model 3 games that it allows the region to be changed in the menu, except for the parent Australian set. I have an idea about the naming the full names of Scud Race clones: scud: Scud Race (Twin, Australia) scuda: Scud Race / Sega Super GT (Twin) // Default region: Export/World scudj: Scud Race / Sega Super GT (Deluxe) // Default region: Japan scudplus: Scud Race Plus / Sega Super GT Plus (Revision A) scudplusa: Scud Race Plus / Sega Super GT Plus This might been another issue altogether, so I might create another for Scud Race. |

If those regions are stored in EEPROM they were probably shipped pre-programmed, and while the codes should be documented it might make more sense to support the sets as clones with different defaults, the key combos sound like something SEGA would use, not an operator. could also be it just accesses a debug mode, and the real alt revisions should use different roms. |

When I was working at a SEGA's arcade, the region settings of those titles (Daytona USA, MaxxTT Super Bike, Indy 500 etc.) could be changed freely and I tested it some times for fun. Of course, by default, they were set to "Japanese" in Japan. |

Haze - are you talking about other Model 3 games? It should be noted that direct region change is supported in VF3, too, obviously not in Australian ROM. |

Relevant PR (by myself, full disclosure) got merged: https://github.com/mamedev/mame/pull/7434 Ready to be marked resolved I guess. EDIT: Hack tags for To The MAXX were in 2017: https://github.com/mamedev/mame/commit/0f2e73a4baa9e8ef971555c1e5cc0326aff94b0a#diff-4239ee4fa39884326452f525c0da048dda3fcc49dac3503197636bb46e08f9ec |
