Summary | 07440: outrun: The flashing sprites simulating the tires movement maybe are not correctly emulated
Description |
Taking a closer look to some pcb videos on youtube and comparing then with mame, looks like those sprites stop flashing in the emulator when the car reaches high speeds, or are less noticeable. Can't determine if this is caused by a CRT effect or not, but this game still has some missing graphic like those reported at 05877, maybe the same thing happens with the tires. The motorbike at Hang-On has a similar effect, but it seems to be correctly emulated. |
||||
Steps To Reproduce | Put your Ferrari at the maximun speed and don't turn the car if it's possible.
Additional Information |
Videos from an Outrun PCB and from mame (The effect is most noticeable playing in the emu rather than in the video) -Arcade: -Mame1: -Mame2: |

What about OUTRUN being played on a CRT monitor using groovymame? |

Seems the same to me, pay attention when you change to the higher gear at the beginning ,looks like it's the moment the tires stop flashing. Testing in mame, it happens when you reach about 170km/h without changing gears. |

It looks exactly as MAME in this recording, playing from a pcb but using a non-CRT monitor: Definitely a BTANB in my opinion |

Yes, but that video was recorded in 50 fps, so I didn't use it as a evidence (You can see no flashing sprites in tires even at low speeds). Maybe someone owns an outrun pcb and could confirm this sooner or later. |

Looking this deeply I'm pretty sure it's not a bug. Setting the brightness and contrast levels on my monitor to the maximum, the sprites now become visible like in the first video. Since I always set those values to the minimum levels, that's why those sprites are barely visible. The differences between those videos from youtube surely relies on different values for brightness and contrast. The best stages for testing this are the Desert (3) and Wilderness (4). For me this report can be closed. |
