Summary 08141: dremshpr: various unemulated graphics effects
Description CRT photos from a Dream Shopper pcb show a number of problems with this game in MAME.

The main playfield is missing the grid lines and the proper color fill.

The win state screen is also missing the white grid lines.

The tunnels are supposed to be red on the main screen, and orange on the win screen.

The screen background color should be black, not dark red.

The black pixels from the player character graphics tiles should be rendered transparent like the enemies and the frogs. He should not be running around in a black square. The same goes for his girlfriend on the bonus screen.

The pits in the playfield should be black, not dark red. They should also periodically blink or flash to warn the player of their location.

There is a single column of 16 black pixels in the bottom right corner of the screen.
Steps To Reproduce
Additional Information I checked as far back as 0.37b16 (0.52) 02 Jul 2001. Dream Shopper has always been like current MAME, so there are no regression to look for.

If you start a game and listen, once the game is playable there is a periodic irregular sound effect that is not tied to any action on the screen. My guess is that this sound effect coincides with the blinking or flashing of the pits. It is difficult to say since video proof is unavailable. This might give you something to look for though.

Red Selector, which is the undumped variant of this game that was sold exclusively through Esco Trading, has surviving advertisements and a sales flyer. The text from these documents calls the pits “black holes” and says that they are supposed to flash or blink. While these games are different in a few respects, I think this feature was present in both games.

A Dream Shopper pcb was installed at the Natsuge Museum on June 27, 2015. Several visitors took photos of the attract mode with their phones and posted them to twitter. The first four photos attached to this post are from that pcb (4 photos from 3 different phones). The final photo (of the win screen) is the start screen from a niconico video that is no longer available. It was a livestream play of Dream Shopper (unknown pcb) by 1 Coin Dojo. I have included that photo because it shows the tunnels as orange.

The Natsuge CRT screenshots line up exactly with the MAME attract mode sequence. It is possible that the Natsuge board represents a different ROM revision, but I am still not convinced that MAME is currently emulating all of the graphics features of this game.

Several videos of the home port were posted in the last week on Youtube. Search:
Dream Shopper (Sord M5, 1982/1983, Sanritsu/Takara Ltd.)
This system does not show a blink effect, but does have red tunnels and the filled grid.

The team that made this game at Sanritsu is the same that implemented the “night sailing” effect in Mermaid / Yactsman that masked part of the screen. It is possible that they are using a similar technique in Dream Shopper to create the black hole blinking effect. This might also account for the missing grid and wrong screen background.

The glitch in the bottom right corner of the screen may be a BTANB or overscan issue, but I suspect it is an emulation issue, because nothing like this appears in the CRT photos.

One more thing:
WIP 0.146u2: Added 'Invulnerability (Cheat)' dipswitch.

I should point out that this DIP setting does let you walk through enemies for a short while, but eventually causes the screen to freeze. I checked several versions back to 0.147 and this freeze occurs in all of them.

Is this really an invulnerability DIP setting? Or is it some kind of test switch?
I doubt anybody has a manual or DIP table to check.

I do wonder if this is just a different revision, there doesn't seem to be anything special about the hardware.

it's noted in the driver that vanvan car original version writes a colourtable to RAM, but the Karateco (bootleg?) sets don't, however I see no such comments for Dream Shopper and the video otherwise just seems a Pacman clone.

Adding photo of the Dream Shopper PCB. Van-Van Car uses the same main board as Dream Shopper but has an additional sub board. I should point out that Van-Van Car has never been correctly emulated in MAME and suffers from the same kind of graphics issues - wrong background color, weird bounding boxes on the text, missing transparency on the player car so that it looks like a black square, rather than a car with round wheels etc.

Shou Time owns this board.

This is definitely odd, with Van Van Car the missing colour isn't in the PROM, so must come from somewhere else?
