Summary 09499: Company infos about pachislo_z80.cpp
Description In April 1993, Universal(株式会社ユニバーサル) was absorbed through a merger by Universal Sales(ユニバーサル販売株式会社).
In 1998, Universal Technos(ユニバーサルテクノス株式会社) absorbed Universal Sales and changed its company name to Aruze(アルゼ株式会社).
In 2009, Aruze changed its company name to Universal Entertainment(株式会社ユニバーサルエンターテインメント).
Although "thunderv" was released in 1997, the distributor was Macy Sales(メーシー販売株式会社) an affiliate of Universal Sales (due to Japanese "pachislot" regulations).
"crankyc" (the actual machine name is "Cranky Contest", not "Cranky Condor") was released by Universal Sales in 1997.
"versus" was released by Aruze in 1998.

Should I credit them as the manufacturers instead of "Universal" or credit them as licensees instead?

By the time these machines were developed, the company known as "Universal Co., Ltd." no longer existed; the name was used solely as a brand for their group companies. Therefore, it is correct to attribute them to "Macy Sales," "Universal Sales," and "Aruze," respectively.
(It is likely that these models were developed by the affiliated company Universal Technos(ユニバーサルテクノス株式会社) , though I do not possess documentation that explicitly confirms this.)
Machines released by companies such as Universal Sales Co., Ltd., Macy Sales Co., Ltd., Mizuho Manufacturing Co., Ltd.(株式会社瑞穂製作所), and Electrocoin Japan Co., Ltd. (エレクトロコインジャパン株式会社) were collectively referred to as "Universal-affiliated" (ユニバーサル系・ユニバ系) machines.
